Our Master Mix is a pre-sterilised, ready-to-use substrate for wood-loving mushrooms. It is a balanced blend of 50% hardwood pellets and 50% soybean hulls, hydrated to field capacity so the moisture is right from day one. Made on the Sunshine Coast and used on our own farm.
Best For
Lion's mane, oyster, pioppino, chestnut, maitake, reishi and other wood-loving species. The hardwood gives the mycelium wood to feed on, while the soybean hulls add nitrogen and nutrition for fast colonisation and a strong first flush. That makes it a great choice for beginners and for growers who want a quick turnaround.
Good to Know
Because half the mix is soybean hulls rather than wood, later flushes can be lighter than the first. It is also too rich for shiitake, which does better on a mix with more wood. We also offer a Shiitake mix with a higher proportion of wood.
Using Your Bag
Check your bag when it arrives. If the seal, filter patch or plastic looks damaged, get in touch before using it. Store it upright in a cool, dry spot out of direct sun, and don't stack more than 2 bags high or squash them, as pressure can damage the filter patch or the bag itself. For best results use it as soon as you can, and within 4 weeks.
Each bag comes sealed with a filter patch. Cut it open to inoculate with grain spawn or culture. You can make your own grain spawn with our sterilised millet grain spawn bags. Open it in a still air box or in front of a flow hood, as clean technique makes the biggest difference to your success rate. After inoculation, colonise somewhere with good airflow, out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat or cold (check your species ideal incubation temperature).
