What Is Dual Extraction? Mushroom Extract Process Explained

The label says dual extracted. Almost every mushroom extract on the shelf says it. Here is the part most labels leave out. Dual extraction is not a marketing term. It is a specific two solvent process, and doing it properly takes weeks, not hours. A lot of what is sold as dual extracted skips most of that time.
This is a walk through of what the process actually involves, why a single solvent cannot do the job alone, and what separates a proper dual extract from a shortcut wearing the same label.
Start With the Chemistry, Not the Marketing
A mushroom is not one uniform substance. It is a mix of different compounds, and those compounds do not all behave the same way in a liquid.
Some of them, polysaccharides like beta glucans, dissolve in water. Others, triterpenes, dissolve in alcohol and largely ignore water. This is not a brand claim. It is basic solubility chemistry, the same principle that explains why oil and water do not mix.
Here is the practical consequence. If you only extract with water, you get the water soluble compounds and leave the alcohol soluble ones behind in the spent material. If you only extract with alcohol, you get the reverse. Either way, half the mushroom’s compound profile never makes it into the bottle.
Dual extraction exists to solve exactly this problem. Run the material through both solvents, combine the two extracts, and you end up with a fuller compound profile than either method could produce on its own. That is the entire premise. Two solvents, two different sets of compounds, one combined result.
What a Proper Dual Extraction Actually Involves
Stage one: drying the fresh mushroom. Before any extraction can start, fresh mushroom material is dehydrated at low temperature. High heat at this stage can damage compounds before extraction even begins, so a slow, low temperature dry is what carries the mushroom’s full profile through to the next stage. This is also where the fresh to dry ratio is set, a measure of how much fresh mushroom went into the dried material that extraction will actually work with.
Stage two: the alcohol extraction. The dried mushroom material is submerged in ethanol and left to macerate. This is where the alcohol soluble compounds move out of the mushroom material and into the liquid. The catch is time. This is a slow process. Rushing it means the alcohol never fully draws out what it is capable of drawing out.
Stage three: the water extraction. The same material, having already given up its alcohol soluble compounds, is then simmered in water. This second stage pulls out the water soluble compounds that the alcohol stage could not touch. Heat matters here too. Simmering for long enough, at the right temperature, is what separates a proper water extraction from a quick rinse.
Stage four: combining. The two extracts, alcohol and water, are brought together into a single liquid formula. This is the full spectrum result people are actually paying for when they buy a dual extract, the combined output of both processes, not just one half of it relabelled.
Where the Shortcuts Happen
Once you understand the two solvent principle, it becomes easy to spot where corners get cut.
Using the same batch of material for both stages, back to back, in a single short process. Chemically, this is closer to a rinse than a true dual extraction. Proper dual extraction generally uses dedicated time for each stage so both solvents can do their job fully.
Calling a cold water and hot water process a dual extraction. Two temperatures of the same solvent is not two solvents. This extracts a narrower range of water soluble compounds and misses the alcohol soluble ones entirely, regardless of what the label says.
Compressing the alcohol stage into days instead of weeks. Alcohol extraction is slow by nature. A short maceration period will always pull less out of the material than a long one, even using identical mushrooms and identical alcohol.
Extracting at high heat to save time. Some of the compounds a dual extraction is meant to capture are heat sensitive. Rushing the water stage with excessive heat can degrade the very thing the process was supposed to preserve.
None of these shortcuts are illegal, and none of them stop a brand from using the words dual extracted on a label. They do mean two products can carry an identical label while representing very different amounts of actual extraction work.
What This Looks Like at Fleur de Fungi
Our Lion’s Mane and Reishi extracts start with mushrooms dried at low temperature using a 10 to 1 fresh to dry ratio, meaning it takes 10 kilograms of fresh mushroom to produce 1 kilogram of dried material to extract from. That dried material then goes through a minimum 90 day ethanol extraction, followed by a separate two day water extraction, using the same batch throughout so nothing is lost in between. The two extracts are then combined into the final liquid formula.
The mushrooms themselves are grown spray free on natural wood and grain substrate at our farm in Coolum Beach, never imported. That is the part of the process that happens before extraction even starts, and it is just as much a part of the final result as the extraction method itself.
Questions Worth Asking Any Mushroom Extract Brand
If you are comparing extracts and want to know what you are actually buying, these are the questions that cut through marketing language and get to the process itself.
How long does the alcohol extraction stage run for? Days suggest a shortcut. Weeks to months suggest a proper maceration.
Is the water extraction a separate stage, or just a second pass with the same liquid? A genuine dual extraction treats these as two distinct stages.
What is the fresh to dry ratio? A higher ratio, meaning more fresh mushroom used per unit of finished product, generally reflects a more concentrated starting point.
Where and how was the mushroom grown? The extraction process only works with what is already in the mushroom to begin with. Growing conditions set the ceiling on what any extraction method can pull out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a single extraction and a dual extraction? A single extraction uses one solvent, either water or alcohol, and captures only the compounds soluble in that solvent. A dual extraction uses both solvents in separate stages and combines the results, capturing a wider range of compounds than either method alone.

The Bottle Is the Sample
You cannot taste, smell, or see 90 days of extraction time sitting in a bottle. What you can do is ask the questions above of any brand you are considering, ours included, and judge the answer rather than the label. A process that takes months to run properly is not going to be the fastest or cheapest way to fill a shelf. It is, however, the only way to get a genuinely full spectrum result out of two solvents that each do half the job.
