Shiitake feeds mainly on wood and does not respond well to too much added nutrition, so this mix keeps the hardwood high and the supplement low. Our \u003ca href=\"\/products\/master-mix-sterilised-substrate-bag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003eMaster Mix\u003c\/a\u003e is richer and better suited to other wood-loving species.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGood to Know\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith less nitrogen than Master Mix, shiitake colonises more slowly, so patience pays off. Expect around 3 months of colonisation, with the block popcorning then changing colour as it matures. To trigger fruiting, cold shock the block for 12 to 24 hours in the fridge, then remove the bag completely before moving it to fruiting conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUsing Your Bag\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCheck your bag when it arrives. If the seal, filter patch or plastic looks damaged, get in touch before using it. Store it upright in a cool, dry spot out of direct sun, and don't stack more than 2 bags high or squash them, as pressure can damage the filter patch or the bag itself. For best results use it as soon as you can, and within 4 weeks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach bag comes sealed with a filter patch. Cut it open to inoculate with grain spawn or culture. You can make your own grain spawn with our \u003ca href=\"\/products\/sterilised-millet-grain-spawn-bag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003esterilised millet grain spawn bags\u003c\/a\u003e. Open it in a still air box or in front of a flow hood, as clean technique makes the biggest difference to your success rate.
